Under the Hood

How Accord makes inaccessible software work.

No source code. No vendor calls. No months-long remediation project. Here’s exactly what happens when Accord runs.

Getting Started

From install to working — in minutes.

1

Install Accord

Download and run the Accord installer for Windows. No administrator account needed — Accord installs and runs entirely as a standard user application. No changes to your enterprise software required.

2

Answer three onboarding questions

The first time Accord opens, it asks what you’re trying to do, what barriers you’re working around, and which assistive technologies you use. It uses your answers to recommend the right support path and configure the right settings. The whole onboarding takes under three minutes. Not sure what fits? The Trust Assistant asks guided questions and explains its recommendation.

3

Select your app from the window picker

Open your target application — the claims portal, HR system, or case management tool you need to use. Switch to Accord, select it from the window list, and Accord scans the interface and activates the overlay within seconds.

4

Done — your profile follows you

Your support path, preferences, and saved app profiles are stored with your account. Sign in on any machine where Accord is installed and your setup is already there. No reconfiguring, no repeating onboarding.

Four More Support Modes

Overlays for every assistive technology.

Beyond Screen Reader and Plain Language, Accord provides dedicated overlays and tutorials for four additional support paths.

Voice Control

Accord’s voice command interface pairs with Dragon and Windows Speech Recognition. It scans a window, presents controls as numbered or labelled targets, and activates the selection on spoken command — so users never need to guess a control name.

Screen Magnification

The magnified focus interface scans controls and presents them one at a time in a large, high-contrast panel — so users with ZoomText or Windows Magnifier can move through a form without losing orientation while zoomed in.

Switch Access

The switch scanning interface cycles through scanned controls at an adjustable tempo. A single switch press activates the current target. Designed around accuracy before speed — with fatigue and dwell timing built in from the start.

Eye Tracking

The dwell selection interface scans controls and highlights each one as a large gaze target. Works with Tobii, EyeGaze, and PCEye hardware. Calibration guidance and eye-break reminders are built into the tutorial path.

Intelligence Layer

Features that go beyond the overlay.

Trust Assistant

An AI advisor that asks guided questions about functional barriers, goals, and work context. It explains why a particular support path is recommended, links to evidence, and launches the right tutorial, overlay, or return-to-work path directly from the conversation.

Return-to-Work Assistant

Structured support for workers returning after injury or illness. The assistant maps job tasks to functional barriers, links each barrier to an Accord support path, and saves a practical digital accommodation plan that can be revisited at follow-up sessions.

Profile Intelligence

Scans any website or Windows app into a structured overview: landmarks, key controls, detail levels, and repair suggestions. The result is saved as a reusable profile so the same app is pre-mapped on every future session for that worker.

Graph Sonification Lab

Detects charts and graphs in any open window, describes their axes and overall trend in plain language, then converts estimated data points into a sequence of tones — pitch rising and falling with the data — so screen reader users can hear what a chart looks like.

Accessibility Settings Center

Comprehensive per-user preferences across five categories: speech and audio cues, visual settings (theme, text scale, focus ring, motion), cognitive aids (calm mode, step-by-step, reduced choices), privacy (local-only mode), and clinician mode for professional use.

Research-Backed Lab

Translates inclusive ICT research findings into practice workflows: non-sequential navigation, cognitive-load reduction, cross-sensory feedback, relevance curation, and co-designed client profiles. Each feature is linked to its source evidence.

Technical Notes

What Accord does — and doesn’t — touch.

✓  What Accord does
  • Reads the live UI element tree using Windows UI Automation APIs
  • Creates a transparent overlay window synchronized to the app window
  • Intercepts keyboard focus events to keep overlay in sync
  • Rewrites displayed text in the overlay — original app text is untouched
  • Saves support profiles and preferences to the worker’s own account — local or cloud, worker’s choice
×  What Accord doesn’t do
  • Modify the enterprise application in any way
  • Require access to source code, database, or application servers
  • Intercept, store, or transmit form data entered by workers
  • Require any change to the application’s server, database, or network config
  • Conflict with the application’s existing authentication or session management
